Mount Mary

Only the best of Australia’s best are ranked as a Mattinson Ten Star Winery.

There was a time, a brief time, between the death of the founder of Mount Mary – Dr John Middleton – and the permanent installation of his grandson Sam Middleton as winemaker when it was wondered whether the glory days of Mount Mary might never be seen afresh. The thinking at the time was that Mount Mary was a place and a mature vineyard and a pioneer of modern Yarra Valley wine, but that it was also inextricably entwined to the force of mind, will and reason that was Dr John. This time quickly passed, and was then equally quickly replaced by the realisation that Mount Mary wasn’t just going to endure under Sam Middleton’s hand; it was going to flourish and, arguably, rise to yet greater heights. The self-evident truth is that Mount Mary is now, and has been for decades, the best that there is in Australian wine. It’s white (Triolet) blend, pinot noir, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon are all benchmarks, both historically and currently. It’s pinot noir helped put the variety on the Australian wine map, and remains Australia’s most collected example of the variety. Mount Mary is a cornerstone of every great Australian wine collection.
