Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is a Mattinson Ten Star Winery.
Only the best of Australia’s best are ranked as a Mattinson Ten Star Winery.

Mount Pleasant, the birthplace of fine Australian wine, the name on the label of many of the best Australian wines of all time. Mount Pleasant is a legend of both the past and of now. It is because of the long line of legendary wines that have been produced at this marquee Hunter Valley estate since its first winemaker walked onto the property in 1921 – the near-mythical Maurice O’Shea – but also because Mount Pleasant still has all of its legendary vineyards in its care, among them the Old Hill, the Rosehill and Lovedale vineyards. Shiraz and semillon rule supreme here although pinot noir, in its own distinctive way, also has its grand moments. Mount Pleasant’s magnificence is built on vineyards, as it should be, but it has also been blessed over the course of a century by a line of winemakers who care deeply for the way these vineyards are expressed: O’Shea, Phil Ryan, Jim Chatto and (current) Adrian Sparks among them. If you’d been lucky enough to visit this estate in the 1940s you would have been spellbound. The experience today is far more luxurious but the wines in the glass are as stellar, and beautiful, as ever.
