Australia’s Most Collected Wines: 2016

Penfolds holds the top three positions (and seven of the top 16). There's no pinot noir to be seen (in the Top 50). Bold chardonnay holds sway. And South Australian wines dominate (with well over 50% of the Top 50). It's the Wine Ark Australia’s Most Collected Wine List 2016 and as always, it's a fascinating insight into the collecting habits of Australian wine enthusiasts.

To quote from the Wine Ark press release: "New entries into the top 50 on the list include Giaconda Chardonnay from Beechworth (up 32 places), Seppelt Chalambar Shiraz from VIC (up 33 places) and Tyrrell's Vat 47 Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley (up 31 places). The big success story for the year is St Hallett, with their Blackwell Shiraz moving up 44 places from 86 to 41. 12 per cent of the list comprises first time entries showing that new Australian wine is just as worthy of cellaring."

The dramatic movements on the list - last published in 2013 - can partially be explained by the addition of new storage facilities to the Wine Ark fleet, many of them in the more southern states.

The list is drawn by, simply, analysing the number of bottles in storage across Wine Ark's 16 storage facilities around Australia. Collectively these facilities house over two million bottles.
