Sevenhill Cellars Names Ben Marx Chief Winemaker
Famous Jesuit wine producer Sevenhill Cellars in the Clare Valley has announced Ben Marx as its new Chief Winemaker. Marx becomes only the third non-Jesuit winemaker in 175 years.
Marx, a widely experienced and awarded winemaker and grape grower, becomes just the 10th Chief Winemaker in Sevenhill’s 175 year history. Marx comes to Sevenhill after significant winemaking roles at Knappstein and Jim Barry Wines, and brings to the role a deep understanding of the Clare Valley’s viticultural landscape, a firm grounding in its traditions, and a clear vision for its stylistic evolution.
The Chief Winemaking role at Sevenhill Cellars is unlike any other in Australian wine.
Founded in 1851, Sevenhill is the Clare Valley’s foundational winery. Its first 150 years of winemaking was conducted by Jesuits. It makes ‘contemporary’ wines, but is also the leading producer of sacramental wines in the Asia-Pacific region. It is the heart of a vibrant Catholic parish, a place for spiritual retreat and reflection, and the most visited tourist site in the Clare Valley.
“After seven years at Jim Barry’s,” Ben Marx said, “I am more than excited to join the team at Sevenhill Cellars – a new challenge, a fruit resource second to none, and a team committed to not only be around for another 175 years but also to make wine of global benchmark quality. With some major developments happening over the next few years and the commitment of the Jesuits, I can’t wait to get started.”
