Faustino Rivera Ulecia Reserva 2018

Mattinson review of Faustino Rivero Ulecia Reserva 2018

Faustino Rivera Ulecia Reserva 2018
$50, 13.5% alcohol, cork, Rioja (Spain)
Tempranillo-garnacha blend.

The linger of flavour through the finish of this wine is very good, if not excellent. It’s not a big wine but it has ample substance, albeit complemented by some general mellowing courtesy of age. Black cherry, smoked meats, fragrant herbs and leather-like characters purr through the palate before peanut shell and peanut oil notes rise through the finish. The finesse of the tannin is a key feature of this wine, as indeed is a smoky/minerally aspect to the aftertaste. In short, this is a pretty classy wine. 94 points.

He’s the only Australian to have won the Australian Wine Communicator of the Year Award more than once. He’s a past winner of a Louis Roederer International Wine Media Award, and is the author of the award-winning book The Wine Hunter. He’s not afraid to put a score beside a wine. But what he’d rather do, is tell you the wine’s story.
