Dave Powell
In an article titled “Dave Powell: The Tempest” I wrote: Headlines are never far off when it comes to Dave Powell. His winemaking renown began at Rockford but he really made his name as the force behind Torbreck, and while Powell’s relationship with Torbreck may eventually have turned sour, and legally acrimonious, his work there was and is one of the best story-branding creations Australian wine has ever seen. Lumberjacks and woodcutters, lairds and descendants, teamed on the one hand with the imposing figure and personality of the man himself, and on the other with the most gloriously compelling, full-bodied, Barossa-Eden wines. Powell of course no longer has anything to do with Torbreck, but it remains an incredible legacy.”
In the history of this Mattinson site it would be in the top-3 articles for clicks.
Powell of course now makes wine under the Neldner Road name, and while I don’t see the wines regularly what I have seen is as compelling as ever.

These images were taken in the stone cottage that Powell uses as an office, in the Barossa Valley. Powell is one of the most characterful people in Australian wine and the cottage itself – with a light coming in through a window and also through an open door – is a perfect place to create images. Accordingly, these images are among by very favourites.
