Bulman Wines

Classification card of Bulman's entry as a mattinson 10-star winery.

BULMAN WINES

Eden Valley & McLaren Vale, South Australia. A founding Mattinson 10-Star Winery – one of the first 50, finalised July 2026.

The first winemaker to win Australia's Jimmy Watson Trophy with a varietal grenache – and, six wines into his own label, already at elite quality.

The case.

When the history of modern Australian wine is written, the name Mark Bulman will feature. It will because he was the first winemaker to win Australia's most prestigious wine prize – the Jimmy Watson Trophy – with a varietal grenache, and it will because he has followed that milestone, under his own name, with releases of the highest of high standard.

Mark Bulman is an Australian winemaker of significance. His own-label wines are drawn from two vineyards – the historic Stonegarden in the Eden Valley, and Gary's Vineyard in McLaren Vale – and both sites, in his hands, have delivered grenaches that rewrite what's possible for their regions. The Eden Valley wine in particular shines light into places that had previously only known shade.

The Mattinson 10-Star list is about the here and now – it is not a legacy list. Six wines into the launch of the Bulman brand, this producer has arrived fully formed, and its quality is elite.

The wines that carry the case.

  • Bulman Glen's Vineyard Grenache 2023 (Eden Valley) – the debut. "It throws characters of stone, concrete, redcurrant, blood orange, mint, rust, seaweed and assorted other shopping list items, but it's the flamboyance of its scent, the long raking farmland of tannin, and the collection of blood-splattered stones that really set it in its place. Yes, I think it's good."

  • Bulman Gary's Vineyard Grenache 2023 (McLaren Vale) – the sibling from a different region, at the same elite standard.

  • Bulman Glen's Vineyard Grenache 2024 – "I've gone through two bottles of this and halfway through the first, I started texting people. It's one of those wines; it gets you excited. We live in exquisite wine times, we must, because here it is."

  • Bulman Gary's Vineyard Grenache 2025 – "This wine is insanely good. It's a web-like wine with such genuine translucence that drinking it is like looking at a bare mid-riff uninterrupted."

The verdict.

Six wines in. Already essential.

Entry edited July 2026.
