New generation takes over at Robert Stein winery

One of Australia’s most respected Riesling producers, Robert Stein Wines, has announced a major milestone with the official transfer of ownership to third-generation custodians Jacob and Gina Stein. The couple, who have been instrumental in the business for over 17 years, now take full ownership of the winery, vineyard, and farm, signalling a new chapter in the story of this renowned Mudgee winegrower.

Established in 1976 by Robert ‘Bob’ Stein, the winery is one of New South Wales’ few multi-generational, family-owned wine businesses. Upon Bob’s retirement, his son Andrew assumed the role of General Manager. Andrew is now stepping down and after 17 years involvement, Jacob and Gina have officially purchased and taken ownership of the family company.

Located nine kilometres north of Mudgee, the property spans 202 hectares and includes a 20-hectare vineyard featuring nine grape varieties, a working farm with livestock and crops, a state-of-the-art winery, cellar door, restaurant, and the original family homestead.

“Generational succession in a family winery is never without complexity. It's a challenging time for the industry, and our family, including my siblings, wanted to ensure the legacy of our father and grandparents is protected. We are proud of our achievements and are looking forward to a bright future,” says Jacob Stein.

“We’ve found a path forward that strengthens our connection to the Stein heritage and honours the traditions established by previous generations over our 187 years in Australia.”

In recent years, the winery has tripled its production, with growth driven by “a focus on integrity, sustainability and a regenerative approach to farming”.

Footnote: the Robert Stein winery produces excellent riesling, among other varieties. Of the Robert Stein Dry Riesling 2021 I wrote (on The Winefront site): “This is a serious riesling. It’s dry, textural, taut and powerful. Lime leaf and juice, hints of gravel and steel, floral whispers and a real sense of presence. This latter point is aided by both texture and grip. This is ‘one sip and you know you’re onto a good one’ territory. Excellent. 94 points.” We’ve reviewed a number of Robert Stein rieslings on The Winefront over the years and they’ve always rated well.

When you pick up a wine book and see thousands of top-scoring wines, it’s hard to know which wine to choose. Mattinson guides you through this maze, giving you an honest view of the best Australian wines, the best wine stories, the best wine producers, the best value wines and simply, the best tasting wines. Importantly, Mattinson will tell you about the top-rated wines and also about the underrated wines. In short, Mattinson knows Australian wines inside and out.

Mattinson has been a photo-journalist since 1987. For the past 25 years he’s been a voice that you can trust when you’re looking for the best wines. He’s the only Australian to have won the Australian Wine Communicator of the Year Award more than once. He’s a past winner of a Louis Roederer International Wine Media Award, and is the author of the award-winning book The Wine Hunter. He’s not afraid to put a score beside a wine. But what he’d rather do, is tell you the wine’s story.
