Bekkers McLaren Vale Grenache 2024

Mattinson review of Bekkers Grenache 2023.

Bekkers McLaren Vale Grenache 2024
$90, 14% alcohol, screwcap, McLaren Vale.

Few stars burn quite so bright as McLaren Vale grenache at its best.

This wine takes time to open up and blossom, but once it’s been given that time it puts on a show. It’s coyly beautiful; it keeps its sinewy arms of tannin pressed tight against its chest; it looks at you from the shadows of its earthen, cherried face and casts glances that are full of spice. If this wine was a comedian its humour would be both dry and meticulously observed. It gives off the impression of detail. It uses ribbons of red berried fruit, dried orange rind characters and a general tension to great and pleasing effect. It’s good. It’s firm. It’s insistent. 95 points.
