AU$70, 14% alcohol, screwcap, Pyrenees.
This is particularly spicy, particularly meaty and particularly savoury, with mescal, pepper, leaf, and roasted nut notes dominating the surface of the wine, both aromatically and on the palate. All the characters spring from a medium-weight well of beautifully ripened fruit; this emperor does indeed have fine clothes. The general persona here though, for all of its fruit flesh, is cool and spicy; it’s a chestnuts-roasting-in-autumn-leaves kind of vibe.I drifted between 93 and 94 points as I tasted and re-tasted, eventually opting for the latter. Its best drinking days will start around 2028 and continue through to 2034+.
94 points – Campbell Mattinson.
