Koomilya JC Block Shiraz 2022
$150, 14% alcohol, screwcap, McLaren Vale.

I’m a bit late to the party with this wine; it’s had the odd accolade in Australia. But now that I’ve tasted the three Koomilya single-block releases from the 2022 vintage, this is the best of them. It’s super-firm, super-concentrated, super-imposing and super-svelte, though at all points it feels authentic and true. Ripe plums, fresh red roses, cedar, earth, twiggy herbs and a gentle run of malt. There are whispers of graphite and even bitumen, and a touch of mint, but every step feels authoritative and deliberate. 96 points.
