Michael Hall Mount Torrens Syrah 2024
Michael Hall Mount Torrens Syrah 2024
AU$60, 13.3% alcohol, screwcap, Adelaide Hills.
Only 845 bottles were made of this (not dozens). It saw 15% whole bunches; the 2022 release saw 94% whole bunches, and the 2023 saw 85%. This difference, as I pointed out on The Winefront, has as much to do with the demands and characters of each season rather than a specific philosophical or style direction.
The berry flavours here are more red-and-blue than black; the floral notes give the wine plenty of lift; and there's a general impression throughout of craft and finesse. This wine is so fresh, so buoyant, and so pretty: its jellied fruit flavour feels both deep and lively, though its splay of fine-grained tannin and spicy, meaty notes give the wine both a firmness and a seriousness. It’s classy stuff, start to finish.
