The Mattinson Classification System – Australia's Best Wineries
The Mattinson 10-Star Classification

Ten stars, earned however greatness arrives.

The Mattinson 10-Star Classification answers one question: how good is this producer, really – not just this year, but every year.

"Greatness doesn't always take decades to reveal itself."
– The Mattinson Classification System
Two ways to earn it

The long way, and the fast way. Both count.

Built over decades

Some wineries earn ten stars the slow way – consistency, character and trust compounded across generations. Wendouree is one of the clearest cases: fifty years of quiet, unassuming, unerring excellence.

Arrived at speed

No one arrives out of nowhere; there's always a back story. But some producers arrive fully formed – Mulline, Bulman and Swinney, among others, are proof.

By way of example

Ten producers, arrived by different roads.

A sample from the current list. See the full 10-Star Wineries list for all producers.

  • Wendouree

    Fifty years of unbroken consistency.

  • Penfolds

An institution beyond rival. But, more importantly here, its current releases are as good or better than ever.

  • Brokenwood

    Decades of restraint and craft.

  • Bulman

Three vintages, all extraordinary. No decades required.

  • Mulline

Arrived with a clear point of view, and has held it since.

  • Henschke

A vineyard hero, par excellence, executed across centuries.

  • Mount Mary

Built by one visionary, thriving anew under his grandson.

  • Giaconda

One steep hillside, one chardonnay, four decades of singular excellence.

  • Adelina

Century-old Clare Valley vines, farmed quietly since the early 2000s.

  • Swinney

    It arrived fully formed.

The criteria

No producer needs to score well against all five.

  • Quality, now

    Now

The wines being made today, judged on their own merits.

  • Consistency

    Over time

The ability to keep producing at this level, release after release, without one outstanding wine carrying a string of average ones.

  • Character & originality

    Either

Wines that taste like nowhere else, made by producers with a clear point of view.

  • Influence

    Over time

Has this producer changed how others make wine, or how a region is understood?

  • Trust

    Either

A reputation built on substance rather than promotion – one that holds up under scrutiny.

The strongest ten-star wineries tend to score well against most of these, in the present tense, not just in retrospect.

What it isn't

Not a replacement for the score. Not a lifetime achievement award.

This classification doesn't replace individual wine reviews or scores. Every vintage from every producer – ten-star or otherwise – is still tasted and judged on its own. A ten-star winery can make an average wine in an average year, and that wine will be reviewed as such.

Nor is status permanent. New ownership, a change in style, or a run of underwhelming releases can lower a producer's rank, just as a sustained run of excellence can raise it.

Beyond wineries

Producers first.

The classification currently applies to wine producers. As the site grows, it's likely to extend to vineyards, regions and grape varieties – anywhere sustained excellence, or an unmistakable current claim to greatness, deserves recognition.

A living system

Reviewed as often as the wine itself changes.

Vintages release, ownership changes hands, vineyards mature, reputations shift. This is not a historical record fixed in time – it is a judgement, revisited as often as the wine demands.
