Buy this wine. Give it a chance to breathe – pour it into a jug and then pour it back into the bottle – and it really does knock the value equation out of the park. Actually it’s not just a value wine; it’s a genuinely good one. It tastes of red and black cherry, aniseed, cloves and black pepper, and while it offers a nod to savouriness it’s basically fruit-driven. The result is that it’s an excellent wine to drink, full stop, though it also has more complexity than you usually see at this price. In short, it’s a steal.
(As an aside, this wine is made by two winemakers who really know their onions, so to speak, and who both make top-grade wine, under their own labels. These guys have high standards and don’t know how to make bad wine, no matter the price point. In tandem here they’ve created a wine exclusively for Aldi, and the winner is us wine drinkers.)
