Penfolds Grange 2022 — Review & Score
Penfolds Grange 2022 is marketed as the 75th-anniversary release of Penfolds Grange Hermitage/Shiraz. It is because 2026 marks 75 years since the first vintage year of Penfolds Grange (1951). Penfolds Grange 2022 is though the 72nd vintage of Penfolds Grange. The 75th anniversary confuses/combines the release year with the vintage year.

The short version of the review: 98 points. A cooler-vintage Grange, more 1999 than 1998, with length and tannin to burn rather than sheer size.
The facts behind the wine:
Grange 2022 is a blend of 97 per cent Shiraz and 3 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, drawn from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. It spent 18 months in new American oak hogsheads, 100 per cent new – the maturation regime Grange has run since its experimental 1951 beginnings. Its stated figures are 14.5 per cent alcohol, a pH of 3.70 and total acidity of 6.9 grams per litre. Penfolds nominates a drinking window of 2028 to 2075, which seems pretty … long.
