Carlei Estate Nord Fruit Day Shiraz 2020

This wine was grown biodynamically. and picked according to the biodynamic calendar, hence the name Fruit Day. I tasted it alongside its partner wine, which goes under the same name save for the fact that it was picked on a Root Day (review here). It’s an interesting comparison. I wasn’t sure whether I’d notice much difference, or whether I’d have a preference, but I did and I do.
This Fruit Day version has a broody aspect to it; it feels slightly surly, which is in keeping with the deep dark pools of fruit flavour that it has to offer. It tastes of blackberry and sweet plums, five spice, peppercorns and red licorice, with hay-like overtones coming as whispers. This wine is both bold and deep and, yet, is simultaneously neat. It’s a mouthful of flavour in the best of ways. 93 points.
