This is a totally gorgeous wine and after one healthy sip I was totally onboard. The spread of fine, almost sandy tannin; the bloom of red licorice, red cherry and strawberry-like fruit flavour; the spice notes coming at you like a hand net flung out across the bay; the way orange peel notes curl and flutter; the way tannin – I’m onto the tannin again – emerges like skin off the flesh and the bone of the wine proper. This is where we’re at. This is the goods. This is a fit, medium weight wine of sinew and import. 95 points.

Alkina is a Mattinson 10-Star Winery.

He’s also a winner of a St Kilda Film Festival Award (as writer-director) and is a former winner of the prized Best Australian Sports Writing Award.

Mattinson, who is 100% independent, puts a score out of 100 on every wine that he reviews. But what he’d rather do, is tell you the wine’s story.
