Blue Pyrenees Estate Richardson Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
AU$120, 14% alcohol, DIAM cork, Pyrenees.

This was grown on a one-hectare block of cabernet that was planted 30 years ago (in 1996). It was matured in all-French oak, 40% new.

It’s a super cabernet. It’s awash with blueberry and blackcurrant flavour, essentially, though notes of anise, lavender, sweet spice and smoked cedar all wrap around beautifully, as indeed does regional mint. The control of this wine, the balance, the substance and the eventual length are all top-notch, though the long, wide web of tannin – perfectly integrated – is the real clincher. This wine isn’t easy-going; it’s imposing. It will perform well, over the long term, in the cellar, though its balance makes it highly enjoyable even now.
