Smeaton Estate Sienna Riesling 2017

Mattinson review of Smeaton Estate Sienna Riesling 2017

Smeaton Estate Sienna Riesling 2017
$38, 13.2% alcohol, screwcap, Adelaide Hills.

Smeaton Estate has been growing great grapes for over 25 years now, though for much of that journey its grapes have been used to make other wine producers look good. It only really produces wine under its own label when it thinks that it has something truly special on its hands. This riesling, at eight years of age, is Exhibit A. It’s quite something. It has terrific intensity of lime-driven flavour, shows modest signs of complex secondary characters, and bursts through the finish with the energy of a wine a third of its age. It’s a complete wine. One sip and you know that you’re onto something special. 96 points.
