Head Wines Old Vine Grenache 2024
Head Wines Old Vine Grenache 2024
$40, 14.5% alcohol, screwcap, Eden/Barossa valleys.
Dry-grown on the Trial Hill vineyard at Pewsey Vale (planted 1940s) with input too from the Riebke vineyard (planted 1880s) at Ebenezer and the Stonegarden (planted 1858) at Springton in the Eden Valley.
There was a time, largely distant now, when people would drive to the Barossa Valley with a trailer attached to their car, such was the volume of wine that they planned to buy and take home. If you were ever going to do that now, this Old Vine Grenache from Head Wines is one that you’d buy by the case-load – or more. It’s a fabulous drink. It’s spicy, fruity, complex, measured and generous at once; it’s awash with raspberry, roasted nuts and licorice, sweet spice and woodsmoke; it’s firm and serious; and it’s mineral-laden. File this under In A Heartbeat. It’s a beauty. 95 points – Campbell Mattinson.
