Head Wines Wilton Hill Shiraz 2024
AU$150, 14% alcohol, DIAM cork, Barossa Valley.

In some ways it’s the ultimate expression of a smooth Australian red. It’s a lot more complex, and higher quality, than those words imply, but it is because it’s so plush, soft and luxurious. The mouthfeel here has the snuggliness of cotton wool. It’s deep with flavour, inky, curranty, plum-drenched and licorice-backed. It carries malt, roasted spice, earth and dark chocolate characters, all of which are escorted by intense, ripe fruit. There’s a firm, mineral-studded, almost rusty aspect to the tannin; this wine feels deep and fresh but it also feels weathered and characterful in the most positive of ways. It’s gorgeousness in a bottle, in short. It’s rich, ripe, firm, controlled and persistent.
