Wilimee Granite Pinot Noir 2025
Wilimee Granite Pinot Noir 2025
AU$80, 13.9% alcohol, DIAM cork, Macedon Ranges.
Fermented naturally, no fining or filtration, winemaking according to the lunar cycle. 50 dozen only. I’ve already raved about the Wilimee Cambrian Pinot Noir 2025 and this Granite version is its equal. The Wilimee Pinot Noir vines were planted in 1996; they were almost thirty years old when this wine was harvested.
It can be terribly difficult, with pinot noir, to get the balance between intensity and finesse right. It’s equally difficult to make complexity look easy. This wine gets all these factors exquisitely right. It’s ripe but it’s not sweet; it’s complex and earthen but it’s neither sour nor hard; it shows glimpses of glossy, cedarwood oak but the pinot noir grape, grown in Wilimee’s Macedon Ranges landscape, is entirely the hero. The tannin here is as harmonious as it is sure. I’m scoring both this wine and the Cambrian version at 95/100; I was tempted with both to make a statement at award them 96. Both are fabulous. Scores are a handy and valuable shorthand but when you taste these wines it’s clear: wine isn’t about scores.
